Liankan Fm
Type Locality and Naming
Turpan-Hami region. The naming section is located in the Huoyanshan area in the western part of the Turpan basin, at Nanshan Mountain, Lianmuqin Township, ~40 km west of Shanshan County. Named by Zhai Renjie, Zheng Jiajian and Tong Yongsheng in 1978.
Lithology and Thickness
Mainly alternating beds of grayish red and orange-red sandstone and muddy sandstone and brownish red, grayish purple and light blue sandy mudstone, with muddy conglomerate. From west to east the thickness decreases and may reach a maximum of >80 m.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
It has a disconformable contact with underlying Paleocene Taizicun Fm.
Upper contact
It has a disconformable contact with the overlying Late Eocene-Oligocene Taoshuyuanzi Fm.
Regional extent
The formation is chiefly distributed at Shengjinkou,Lianmuqin, Nanliankan and Taizicun of Shanshan County, etc., in the western part of the Turpan basin.

Fossils
Now 6 genera and 7 species of fossil mammals have been found in the Liankan Formation, of which anthracotheres and deers of artiodactyls are more primitive than the Oligocene common types in other parts of Asia. The main species are Lophialetes expeditus, Teleolophus liankanensis, Bothriodon sp., Xinjiangmeryx parvus, etc.
